|The XTERRA ERG400 is one of those rowers that fall between budget and off-budget machines and mid-range models that are not very familiar with quality manufacturers. Before we discuss the pros and cons of the ERG400, let’s take a look at the XTERRA Fitness brand.
XTERRA is not the name that immediately comes to mind when it comes to rowing machines, but they have a good reputation for their treadmills, bicycles and elliptical machines. They have been present in the world of fitness for over thirty years and are the most famous brand in the world of triathlon.
But despite the fact that they have a good range in all other types of fitness equipment, this model (made in Taiwan) seems to be a step towards the rowing market. If you leave all that out, how’s it going?
As with all our exams, we start with our experience in unpacking and assembly. The good news is that it is well packaged and that all parts were present and correct. But if you can’t work, you might need help building it up.
After the meeting, the first impression is that the rower has fallen a bit on the chair. We have seen it in a number of budget models and it looks like a budget seat. That in itself does not break, but sometimes a few extra dollars spent on simple things can make a big difference.
Rudder’s good. Many business models (and some are close to this model) have a low seat and it can be difficult to get in and out, especially if you’re rowing hard for half an hour. The seat of the ERG400 is about 16 inches off the ground, not as high as a gym, but comfortable enough. The frame seems to be solid, although we’ve noticed that with a heavier oarsman it starts to move a bit when you give him a stick.
The aluminium angle bar is suitable for complex drives in combination with 16 levels of resistance due to a mix of magnetic and aerodynamic resistance. This offers the advantage of a realistic feel of the rudder in the water (air) with the comfort of a one-click (magnetic) control. However, if you have little space to use the oar, the fan can become noisy at high speeds.
Pro-Rower RX-750 the waterproof model many rowers prefer indoors.
