Review of NordicTrack RW200 Rowing Machine

The NordicTrack made a name for itself in the early nineties with its strange looking interior version, which became very popular. For 10 years they sold treadmills, bicycles and ellipse simulators and gained a good reputation.

However, some time ago they switched to rowers and today there is only one on the market – the NordicTrack RW200.

Is that why a company that produces quality conveyor belts is expanding into a semi-efficient rowing machine? In short, it’s almost… but we don’t think it’s enough.

The assembly part isn’t too complicated, but we know that some users who found the included screws couldn’t do the job – ours was fine. The first thing that hit him was a beam (also called a rail). It is made of steel, as all rowers should be, but it is a long animal, which makes it suitable for users over 1.80 m tall. This is important because a short bar means that a long or long-legged rower will not be able to reach the full goal at the end of the race and thus limit the benefits – see the detailed description of the rowing technique.

The rowing position is good, but if the legs are tilted and wide and the legs are held in position, the chair will not allow the taller user to move comfortably. The advantage is that the seat is not too low, which makes users with knee or back problems uncomfortable when getting on and off the seat. The pen is almost a standard pen that you will find on many rowing machines in this price range.

But what can be an obstacle for many now is resistance. The NordicTrack RW200 is an air rudder in the sense that it uses the steering wheel to pull the muscles slightly. You can select one of the ten resistance levels using the lever – see the red circle in the figure on the right. The plane is made of plastic and seems a bit fragile to us – but that’s not a problem. This allows a good rower to get out of the resistance distance, in other words, level 1 seems to be quite close to level 10.

It’s a pity, because everyone, except the unfit ones, can find it a bit easy and feel that they don’t get the maximum out of the training. However, for an intensive workout it is not necessary to pull too hard, because your cardiovascular system will always benefit, but many will want to change and may be disappointed if the amplitude is low.

A little frustrated, if only a little, when you see some of the really cool displays they have on their treadmills.

It is a rather small screen, but it comes with 20 pre-installed programs, which is much more than many similar devices in this price range.

One of the advantages is that it really shows the watts, the amount of energy you produce, so you can use Tabata Strength Training. It is an extremely effective tool for training and can produce quick results.

It also has built-in speakers with a connection for your smartphone or iPod – no reason to buy this particular model alone, but still a fun touch.

If only the resistance range were wider, we would think it would be an interesting machine in the mid-price segment. There is a lot to think about, but despite the long beam, the good quality of the construction (with some reservations), many would feel abandoned by the lack of resistance at level 10.

If you are currently disabled or recovering from an illness or injury, this may be a good place to start.

Feedback on similar rowers We love…

  • Good mounting quality (with one exception – see below)
  • Robust steel frame
  • Longer radius for more demanding users
  • Good value for money (if you don’t mind light resistance).
  • Not as noisy as many pneumatic rowers.
  • Has 20 pre-installed programs (good value for money)
  • The console/monitor can be customized
  • Built-in speakers for Smartphone or iPod
  • Read the Watt display
Photo We don’t like…

  • Not much resistance – it’s too easy for many people.
  • Plastic flap selector lever – looks a little broken
  • No heart rate monitor means no heart rate monitor.
  • The LCD screen is quite small
  • The chair is simple, and some may find it uncomfortable.
  • Provides plenty of space, even when folded.

It’s also worth seeing:
With this price you’re in the middle of the rowers’ budget. For less money the always popular Stamina Air Rower is a good alternative. Or for something completely different, the new Stamina Wave 1450 water sprinkler is worth a look for a good price.
