|The Akonza Magnetic Rowing Simulator is a reasonably priced model. The Akonza brand is mainly known for its exercise bikes and has recently become active in rowing. And I think it is safe to say that they play a safe game with a compact, not absurd car like this. It is a universal device that you can find under different brands such as Gymax.
As with all our exams, we’ll start assembling. Most of the work is done for you, because many parts are already pre-assembled and can therefore be carried out quickly and easily.
The rowing position is good, but if you are 6 feet or more, you can find a tree trunk on the short side, which means you won’t get a full stroke. The footrests are wide and the Velcro fasteners keep the feet firmly in place. It may sound trivial, but there’s nothing more annoying than straps loosening so the legs don’t stay in place – yes, we know, first world problems and all that :0).
The handle is angled, has a large diameter and a cushion which makes it easy to hold in your hand and keep it in place during rowing. The chair is well adjusted and well shaped, making it comfortable for long sessions. But when the resistance mechanism is silent, the plastic rollers under the seat aren’t the best we’ve ever seen, and squeak as you move the beam up and down. The seat is also quite low, so it can be difficult to get up and take off if your knees are not the same as before and your back sticks out more than you do :0).
The Akonza is a lightweight model that weighs 59 pounds, so it really moves a little faster. And be careful: If you live in an apartment and don’t want to disturb your neighbours, it’s probably best to use a rubber mat underneath to absorb vibrations and noise.
Let us now move on to what for many may become a breach of the agreement – the mechanism of resistance. First of all it has 10 levels of resistance, but even at the highest level it is not too difficult. You can still do a good cardio workout because you don’t need a lot of resistance to increase your heart rate. But if you’re looking for a real challenge, it’s not for you.
Another problem is the belt, which offers resistance. It is elastic and does not seem to withstand too many months of regular and prolonged use. We will also ask if we can really speak of a fully magnetic model, because the elastic seems to offer more resistance than the magnets on the flywheel.
The wheels integrated in the front support beam are a good thing. When you’re done, you can fold up the tiller, tilt it forward and let go of the wheel – see picture bottom right.
It has a scan mode, i.e. it scans the route, time, etc. about every 5 seconds.
The console is equipped with a SmartPhone/Tablet holder located underneath the screen. You can watch a movie or a TV show, but you can’t watch your show.

If you have problems with cost and space, take a look at Stamina 1110. If your budget is a bit larger, you can get the best car with the Sunny RW5515.
