|Concept2 is the designation for steering machines. If you’re rowing in the gym, there’s a 95% chance it’s one of them – probably higher. But it’s not just fitness clubs and gyms that choose, Concept2 is the front entrance to the gym, which is used by rowing clubs. And these machines need a considerable amount of stick!
The Concept2 model D (see below) is now the best-selling rowing machine in the world and has been around since the mid-1990s. And the next car in their range, the E-model, is still right behind them.
What makes them so powerful in indoor rowing? Like any other company, it started in 1976 with a modest start by two rowers, Dick and Pete Dreissiggers. They started making rudders and switched to their very successful inner rudders in 1981. The rest is the history, as they say, of having dominated the market from their headquarters in Morrisville, Vermont – the full story of the company can be read on their website.
Here we look at the development of the legendary D and E models. It will not surprise you that it started with model A.
Increasingly popular Rowing simulator model D
It may have existed since 2003 (yes, that was 13 years ago!), but the D model is always a winner.
For a very reasonable price of $945 you can get a sports and commercial oarsman who accepts anything you can throw at him.
And thanks to PM5’s new online performance monitor and PC compatibility, it can compete with any device offered by the competition.

Attention: 95% – an incredible price-quality ratio!

and it doesn’t make any sense.
Model E – Preferred gymnasium
Model E was launched in 2006 and because it shares many components and the basic design with its younger brother, Model D, the seat is higher and has a shiny surface.
Model E is popular in gyms above D due to its high seat height, making it easier to turn on and off for overweight users or people recovering from injuries.
The chain is also made of nickel plated steel, which requires less maintenance. In the gym, it is customary to use rowing machines for up to twelve hours a day – so these machines must be stiff!

History of the concept2
Model A Bare – press the button to enlarge.
Model A first appeared on the market in 1981 and seems fairly simple by today’s standards. It used a bicycle wheel to which valves were attached for strength and consisted of a simple speedometer to inform the user of its speed.
The wood was used for the handle and the kicking, and you can see the target group when you look at the chair – slim and fit rowers! The seat slides up and down on an equally thin rail, and the whole car feels slippery when it is a bit fragile. But that didn’t stop him from taking a world-leading position in indoor rowing.
Yes, it looks like you can assemble something in the garage, but it was Concept2’s commitment to innovation that got them off to a good start. Model A was sold until the end of production in 1986.
Concept2 Rowing simulator Model New Generation Rowing simulator Model B
Model A was replaced in 1986 by model B. Wood was used as before, but the rail was supported by stronger legs.
The chair has been upgraded to serve a new user who now wants to buy home fitness equipment in the growing market.
One of the most important developments was the development of a more complex flywheel – well, it had to be better than a bicycle wheel :0). The paddle wheel consisted of large corner fans and was housed in a metal cage. A more informative screen displays data such as rhythm, speed and distance.
Just like its predecessor, it has become a very popular rowing simulator and has become well known in the rowing industry.
Model B was produced until 1993.
Modern rowing simulator model C
Now we’re talking. The Model C was introduced in 1993 and is very similar to the modern rowing machine you find today. While wood was still used for the hilt, the footrests were now made of plastic and the rail was thicker, making it stronger.
The steering wheel was completely closed and had a lever to select the resistance level from 1 to 10 (see here for more details on using resistance levels).
If anyone had any doubts about the company before, Model C has certainly strengthened its reputation as an observer.
Model C remained in service for ten years until 2003.
Concept2 also makes slides for its cars to repeat the movement in the water. They always design and produce oars that are considered to be the best. Recent developments include online applications and capabilities that enable users to compete with others around the world.
Away from rowing – making ergometers for skiers. Whatever they do, their commitment to quality, innovation and customer service makes them the obvious choice for many.
We are waiting for the F model with Breathable Ace :0).
